THE MODERN PROTEST :: Whether you agree with the recent backlash against Stoli vodka in light of Russia’s horrific treatment of their LGBT people, consumer activism has become a huge go-to when the every man wants to do more than take to the streets in protest.
Money we spend often goes to support the things we oppose, often which is why we’ve been loving a most excellent app for months now. It’s called Buycott, and it helps you organize your consumer spending so that it reflects your principles.
Use it to scan products you buy. Personalize your use by joining user-created campaigns (ie: GMO related movements) or create your own. Buycott will look up the product, determine what brand it belongs to, and figure out what company owns that brand (and who owns that company, ad infinitum). It will then cross-check the product owners against the companies and brands included in the causes that matter to you, in order to tell you if the scanned product conflicts or jives with one of your campaign commitments. You can also add new products into the app’s library that are not already there.
Beware: it may shock you to find out that brands you have been loyal to for years support the very things you strongly oppose. Shopping will never be the same, which is why Buycott is the best app we’ve ever downloaded.
