CHOOSING CHOICE :: I was working on my computer one night while listening to my iTunes library and Tom Geiger came on singing ‘Can One Day Change Your Life’
It made me realize about how life really is short, just like the cliché.
Over the past year a friend who lives in the same building as I do had to get a stint put into his heart to help it pump better. The stint didn’t work. He then had to go to the hospital where he was told he requires heart bypass surgery.
This is where the reality of how one day can change your life sunk in.
At a visit to the surgeon it was discovered his heart is filled with diabetes, a disease he’s had for the past five years, although his heart condition was caused by smoking. I guess being a smoker, candy lover and a bouncer where cigarettes and candy treats are offered freely for over the past 20 years came with a price.
When he came back from an appointment with the surgeon he knocked on my door and told me what’s next for him. They will take veins from his legs to replace the valves in his heart to make the blood flow normally. Before that they will break his ribs to retrieve his heart which will be placed in a cold silver container which will be connected to a pump in order to keep the heart alive for the six-hour surgery.
He told me the surgeon said cigarettes are what caused his heart problem in the first place. I told him to not waste the surgeon’s, or my time if he plans on continuing to smoke and eat refined sugars after the surgery.
He then told me he had no cigarettes and he was craving apple pie.
Can one day change your life?
Yes it can, only if you want it to.
